Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders' Association Offering Project Opportunity for Students
Tuesday, January 8th, 2019 -- 8:00 AM
(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The Wisconsin Ayrshire Breeders' Association is giving young people the opportunity to work with a registered Ayrshire as a project animal. As part of the group's Shayr-A-Heifer program, a calf is purchased by WABA, and then placed with the junior project member for them to raise. Ownership of the animal will be on a 50/50 basis with the WABA and the junior member, until the contract ends after two years. At that time the junior member can buy out the heifer or place her on the WABA Spring Sale for half of the proceeds. During the project, junior project members will learn about raising their animal, showing, breeding, Ayrshire genetics, and animal husbandry in general. A mentor will be assigned to the youth member to guide them through these steps and enhance their growth.
Each year while they have the animal, the participant will complete a scrapbook and short essay showcasing their work and skills gained. Junior member applicants must be under 21 years of age, interested in learning more about Ayrshires, and have a plan of how to raise and care for their animal. Applications are due by January 20. For more information, call 715-532-7707 or 608-623-2834.
