Wisconsin Leads the Nation in Barn Fires

Friday, January 4th, 2019 -- 7:49 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -A new report finds that Wisconsin led the nation in barn fires that resulted in the deaths of farm animals over the past year.

Citing findings from the Animal Welfare Institute, WBAY-TV reports that Wisconsin had 19 such fires during 2018. That was followed by Ohio and New York, which each had 18 barn fires that had livestock fatalities. The television station interviewed Bellevue Fire Chief Jack Mlnarik, who said fires in large structures such as a barn are often difficult to contain. He also mentions that barn fires are three times more likely to happen during the winter months and that's when animals are most likely to be kept inside.

In just the past two months, several fires claimed the lives of dairy cattle, young stock, horses and even chickens in various incidents.
