Wisconsin's Hog And Pig Inventory Is Up

Wisconsin's hog and pig inventory totaled 325,000 head on December 1, up seven percent from the same time last year.According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, the USDA says breeding hog inventory in the Badger State was counted at 44,000 head, which was about 1,000 less than 2017. But market hog numbers totaled 281,000 head--much higher than the 255,000 counted a year earlier. The agency says Wisconsin's annual pig crop between December 2017 through November 2018 was 867,000 head, up 12 percent for the year. Pigs per litter averaged 10.45, which set a new all-time record.
U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on December 1 was 74.6 million head. This was up two percent from 2017, but down slightly from September 1, 2018. Breeding inventory, at 6.33 million head, was also up two percent from last year. Market hog inventory was 68.2 million head. That was two percent more than last year, but down slightly lower than the last quarter.
