Keeping Birds at Your Feeder During the Winter

Monday, December 10th, 2018 -- 10:48 AM

(WRN) -Winter is here, and if you're looking to keep birds at your feeder, you might have to make it more attractive to your feathered friends.

DNR biologist Ryan Brady says the best general bird seed you can put out is black sunflower seeds.

"It's really inexpensive, it works for a lot of different species, and it has a high fat content so it's good for the birds."

Brady says one idea to consider is improving your yard with a shrub near your feeder.

"A shrubbery that's going to have a lot of thick branches, provide some cover from the elements. Evergreens or conifers are excellent, so maybe plant a spruce or a fir."

Brady says if you can't plant a shrub near your bird feeder, you should consider creating other cover like a brush pile.

"Maybe branches, or other clippings that you have cut around your yard to spruce things up. Instead of discarding them, make a pile of them off in the corner of your yard or property, maybe near the feeding station?"

That shrub or brush pile provides essential cover to birds, and also gives them some protection from the cold.
