Electors in the Town of McMillan Will Vote for a Second Time on the Tax Levy

Friday, December 7th, 2018 -- 8:02 AM

(WDLB) -Electors in the town of McMillan north of Marshfield will vote for a second time tonight on how much they will tax themselves next year.

The special meeting was called for after some on the town board didn’t like how the first vote went, when a majority of electors present at a November 13th meeting cut the proposed tax levy by nearly 166-thousand dollars, from 665-thousand-815 dollars to 500-thousand. McMillan resident Sam Steiner was in the minority that night, and voted in favor of the higher amount.

The levy cut was made on a vote of 51-39. Among those voting for the lower half-million dollar levy was Mike Joyce, who says the town has a budget surplus, more than enough money to operate without raising the levy any higher.

Under the original levy amount, the portion of McMillan’s 2019 budget covered by taxpayers would cost an additional 18-dollars per thousand dollars of equalized value, according to Joyce.

Town officials are requesting reconsideration on the approval of the 500-thousand dollar levy, and are asking that tax payers attend a special meeting tonight for another town-wide vote. Steiner says it’s important for people to come and have their say and have a civil discussion.

A 30-thousand dollar reduction was made after town officials held a special meeting this past Monday to pay off a ladder truck. Supporters of the higher tax levy amount were stressing the importance of tonight’s meeting, noting that only 90 electors, a little over four-percent, voted on the levy on November 13th. But Joyce is quick to point out that just 17 people, or less than one-percent, voted on the levy the year before. The meeting will take place tonight at 6 p.m. at the McMillan Fire Department. We’re told a sheriff’s deputy is being brought in to maintain order and civility at tonight’s meeting.
