Ice May Be Forming on Wisconsin Lakes, But Remember to Stay Safe

(WRN) -Ice is starting to form on lakes in northern Wisconsin, but remember to be safe before you head out to cut a hole.Warden Mark Little says you're going to want to leave your truck on shore.
"Certainly not a good time to take a vehicle on the ice right now, because the ice is just starting to form. Temperatures, depths, currents and everything make ice highly variable."
Little says a little bit of scouting can keep you safe out on the ice.
"Go where other people have gone. Check with the locals, see where the thickest ice when they've been out and ask what the local conditions are when you're buying your dozen minnows at the bait shop."
Little says it's important to always think about your safety when you head out onto a lake, frozen or not.
"No ice is truly safe, and you should always use precaution when out on the ice no matter what time of the season, because it is so highly variable."
He says it's a good idea to wait to put your permanent ice shacks out on the lake, and that it's best to stick to popups and other lightweight equipment.
