Final Wisconsin Crop Report for 2018
Tuesday, November 27th, 2018 -- 9:03 AM
(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Last week's warmer temperatures and dryer weather helped farmers in Wisconsin inch closer toward finishing their fall harvest. But according to the state's final crop/weather summary of the year, which was released on Monday, the conditions left soils wet and messy in certain areas, making it difficult for heavy machinery to enter the fields. Reporters noted that dairy farmers also struggled to empty their manure pits as fields were either too frozen to incorporate manure or too wet to support machinery. Topsoil moisture levels were just one percent short, 79 percent adequate and 20 percent surplus. As of Sunday, the corn for grain harvest reached 88 percent. That was two days ahead of the five-year average.
The moisture content of the crop was unchanged for the week at 18 percent. About 94 percent of the soybeans have been taken off the fields--five days slower than last year and 11 days behind the average. Ninety-three percent of the winter wheat crop has emerged, about 11 days behind last November. And fall tillage progress was reported at 68 percent complete. The agency will issue a final year in review crop report in early December.
