Get Ready for Winter Driving

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) -Snow and sleet are finally starting to show up this fall, and it's time to get ready for winter driving in Wisconsin.D-O-T spokesman Rob Miller says that drivers need to pay attention to road conditions, especially when there's fog and ice buildup.
"Usually among the first things to ice up tend to be bridge decks, overpasses, those types of things, so just always keep in mind that those can be especially slippery."
Miller says if you do slide off into the ditch or the side of the road, don't get out of your car.
"Whenever possible you want to stay buckled up inside your vehicle. Call for help, wait for help to arrive."
Miller says being outside of your car on an icy road is extremely dangerous, and you're much more likely to get injured by another car sliding into you. Miller says you want to make sure your tires are in good condition, and maybe replace your headlights if they're a little weak.
"Keep those low beam headlights on, so that not only can you see what's ahead, but so that other people can see you."
You also want to make sure your wiper blades are in good working order, and get your brakes and shocks checked to better handle icy conditions. Remember to give yourself more time than you need to get where you're going, and avoid distractions while you're on the road.
