Election Day Today, Get Out and Vote!

Monday, November 5th, 2018 -- 11:08 AM

-Election Day is here in the state of Wisconsin and across the nation.

Here in Clark County, some races you’ll see on the ballot include the race for governor and lieutenant governor. The big names on the ballot include Republican Governor Scott Walker and Republican Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch running for re-election. Their Democratic opponents include State Schools Superintendent Tony Evers and Mandela Barnes. For other state wide races, Senator Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat, is running for re-election against her Republican opponent Leah Vukmir. For the 7th Congressional District, Republican Assemblyman Sean Duffy is running against his Democratic opponent, Margaret Engebretson. Also, Attorney General Brad Schimel, a Republican, is running against Democrat Josh Kaul for Attorney General, Republican Jay Schroeder is running against Democrat Doug La Follette for Secretary of State and Republican Travis Hartwig is running against Democrat Sarah Godlewski for State Treasurer.

Some races that are a little more local include Republican Kathy Bernier running against Democrat Chris Kapsner for the 23rd Senate District which includes Clark County and the surrounding area. Also, Republican Bob Kulp is running for re-election for the 69th Assembly District, which includes some of Clark County and to the east towards Marshfield. Kulp was initially running unopposed for the second time since his election in 2013. However, as of two weeks ago, Marshfield resident Kathleen Rulka, a Democrat, registered as a write in candidate. Rulka had thought about running for the seat, but her husband, Brian Ewert ran as a Democrat for the 7th Congressional Seat during the primary and she wanted to focus 100% of her efforts on his race. With his loss to Margaret Engebretson, Rulka decided to run after she received a lot of support from the community. There are also elections for County Sheriff, County Clerk of Courts and County Coroner, but those races are unopposed.

Finally, some other items of note on the Clark County Ballot include a referendum for those living in the Loyal School District. The referendum asks residents to authorize the school district to exceed the revenue limit by $280,000 for this school year for building maintenance and by $675,000 for the next school year through the 2022-2023 school year for operational expenses. Also, countywide, on the ballot is a question asking whether county residents support legalizing the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes and regulating it in the same manner as prescription drugs. To clarify, if that were to pass on the county level, it would simply be sent to the Wisconsin Legislature showing Clark County supports the legalization. It wouldn’t mean that medicinal marijuana is legal in the county and state.

As a reminder, you must have your photo ID to vote in the elections today. This election cycle has been particularly vicious as many Democrats, angered by the outcome of the 2016 elections, see this as an opportunity to bring the current political climate back into check. Republicans view it as a test of the current angry and charged political climate. Early voting results have already exceeded 2014 midterm levels.
