(WDLB) -A ceremony was held Wednesday to mark the rededication of Pittsville as the geographical center of the state. As part of the ceremony a new roadside sign was installed, supplementing a sign that exists on the actual site, on an island about 40 yards off Veedum Road. Department of Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett spoke on Pittsville’s significance as the “City in the Center” and how it makes the city unique.
"Wood County is great in terms of tourism. It gets a lot of people. But really, people love that quirky photo opportunity. They love small towns with genuine folks, so I think this is really going to become a stop for folks to say, 'okay, we've got to get that small town sign. We've got have that quirky moment and, while we're here, lets explore the area.'"
In 1952, Governor Walt Kohler declared Pittsville as the “Geographical Center of Wisconsin.”
