(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Food prices at your local grocery store are continuing to trend a little higher this year after falling a bit in 2017.That's according to the Wisconsin Farm Bureau, which released its latest Marketbasket Survey on Wednesday. The semi-annual report shows that the cost of 16 basic food items in 24 communities totaled $51.57--up $1.43 from the previous survey in March and $1.91 more than this time a year ago. WFBF Spokesperson Amy Eckelberg says of the items surveyed, just over half of them increased in price, with bacon and ground chuck seeing the largest jump in value. On the other hand, eggs and milk prices rang up lower at the cash register, while shredded mild cheddar and sirloin tip roast remained about the same. The farm group pointed out that during the last three decades, retail grocery prices have gradually increased while the share of the average dollar spent on food that farm families receive went down.
Communities surveyed include Appleton, Belleville, Beloit, Chilton, De Pere, Dodgeville, Elroy, Hartland, Manawa, Manitowoc, Marshfield, New Glarus, New Richmond, Paddock Lake, Platteville, Plover, Prairie du Chien, Saukville, Shawano, Sheboygan, Sparta, Waterford, West Bend and West Salem. The USDA says Americans will spend approximately 10 percent of their disposable annual income on food, the lowest average in the world.
