Marshfield Clinic Health Systems Eliminating More Positions

(Marshfield News Herald) -Marshfield Clinic Health Systems' notice to the state that it will eliminate 25 jobs identified only a fraction of the total job cuts that are coming, a company spokesman confirmed.Marshfield Clinic Health Systems was required to notify the state of the elimination of 25 jobs based in the city of Marshfield, said Jeff Starck, Marshfield Clinic public relations specialist. The company was not required to notify the state that a total of about 115 medical transcriptionist jobs will be eliminated because most of those employees work from home at locations spread across the state, Starck said. Marshfield Clinic is upgrading its systems with new voice-recognition technology, Starck said. Instead of doctors voice-recording information and transcriptionists turning the recordings into reports, doctors dictate the reports themselves. Although there will be months of transition to the new process, it will eventually eliminate the need for the medical transcriptionists, Starck said. The automated transcriptions will allow other doctors and patients to get medical reports faster and more efficiently, Starck said.
Marshfield Clinic is working with a company called M*Modal to take over transcribing Marshfield Clinic reports during the transition, Starck said. The clinic also has arranged for M*Modal to offer jobs to Marshfield Clinic transcriptionists when their jobs are eliminated Nov. 17. Starck said he couldn't comment on any pay or benefit changes the employees will experience in the changeover. According to the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions corporate records, M*Modal is a foreign business that has been registered in Wisconsin since 2008. In 2012, the company changed its name from Medquist Transcriptions to M*Modal Services. The company's headquarters is listed as Franklin, Tennessee. M*Modal's website lists Canadian and Indian offices.
