Marshfield City Hall Will Open Doors at New Location on Monday

Wednesday, September 5th, 2018 -- 8:02 AM

(USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin) -Marshfield City Hall will be closed Friday, Sept. 7, as city workers move to their new offices.

After the move, City Hall will be in the former Forward Bank building, 207 W. Sixth St. Public city meetings will continue to be held in the basement of the current location on South Central Avenue through September as workers put the finishing touches on the new council chambers, City Administrator Steve Barg said. City Hall offices will reopen at the new location Monday, Sept. 10; office hours will be from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Businesses in the South Central Avenue location, including Hefko Floral and Oasis Nail Salon, will remain in the building. The Marshfield Police Department will not move from its location on West First Street. The City Council voted in May 2016 to purchase the bank building for $2.6 million. Barg said city officials thought it best to move headquarters to a new location because the city was using only a third of the 75,000-square-foot building.

Barg said the current building isn't worth as much as originally thought and more repairs were needed than anticipated. The future of the city's headquarters was nearly set in May 2017 when developer Gorman and Co. was interested in purchasing the South Central Avenue property for $500,000. However, the deal fell through when the company discovered they wouldn't receive historic tax credits. Barg said the city has had a few parties interested in purchasing the building and that most have been focused on redeveloping into a mix of offices, retail and housing.
