The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office reports that four people killed in an Apostle Island kayaking incident where from Loyal.WQOW-TV reports that Sheriff Michael Brennan said Erik Fryman, 39, and his kids 3, 6 and 9-years-old died. The mom, Cari Mews, 29, from Loyal was the only survivor.
The Sheriff’s office says just before 8:30 Thursday night, authorities received a call from a woman who reported her sister had sent “alarming” text messages reading “911” and “Michigan Island.”
The woman said her sister was vacationing on Madeline Island with her husband and three children. La Pointe Police investigated the call, and determined the family had left the island in a kayak earlier in the day to tour the Apostle Islands.
A water rescue ensued. Rescue crews found the mother alive in the water just after 10 p.m.
The father and two of the children were found dead in the water after midnight. Strong thunderstorms hampered the search but the third child was found dead Friday morning around 10.
A preliminary report shows the family’s kayak had capsized. While trying to swim to Michigan Island, the mom got separated from her other family members.
Authorities say all of the family members were wearing life jackets.
