Wisconsin Dairy Plants Make More Cheese in May

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Wisconsin dairy plants made more cheese in May than the same month a year earlier after failing to do so in April for the first time in 43 months.The USDA reports that the state churned out 287.4 million pounds of cheese in May. That was up a fractional 0.5 percent from the same period in 2017, and 1.1 percent more than this past April, which had less days on the calendar. Nationally, about 1.09 billion pounds of cheese was produced in the United States in May.
That was 1.4 percent more than the same month last year, but 1.7 percent above the previous month's production totals. Dry Whey output in Wisconsin was recorded at 28.4 million pounds, which was down 3.6 percent from last year, and 3.7 percent less compared to last month.
