Wood County Board Approves Non-Binding Referendum on the November Ballot

(WDLB) -Wood County may be joining a growing list of local government entities seeking a constitutional amendment on the Citizens United Supreme Court decision regarding campaign spending by organizations and corporations. The Wood County Board of Supervisors yesterday voted to place a non-binding referendum on the November ballot to determine if voters support an amendment to the Constitution to allow financial limits on political campaign contributions. The national movement has already received support from 130 Wisconsin communities, including the city of Marshfield, where voters passed a spring referendum with over 80 percent support.
Wisconsin Rapids Supervisor Mark Holbrook supported the resolution. "The questions here is one of philosophy more than it is politics. When it comes to a matter of philosophy we have to allow the public to decide how they feel about issues like this. There may in fact be things that are hidden and there may not be. I think the overwhelming feeling that I have about a resolution like this is it's time to hear from the people because it is their constitution and they have a right to make a statement about issues like this."
A resolution to place the matter on the ballot was brought forth by the Judicial & Legislative Committee, and it passed on a vote of 16-3, with Supervisors Bob Ashbeck, Lance Pliml, and Donna Rozar voting “no”.
