-The Owen-Withee School Board discussed a Wheelchair Accessible Van at their meeting last week. The board approved the purchase of a used wheelchair accessible van not to exceed $25,000. Executive Sales and Leasing is holding a used 2013 van that will accommodate two students that use wheelchairs. The van has 30,000 miles costs $23,900. Currently, the district pays Abby Vans approximately $15,000 per year to transport one student to and from school. Starting next fall another student will be added. The board also discussed the School Safety Grant. The district has applied for grant money under the State’s $100 million Safe Schools Grant program.
The grant application is for just under $70,000 and includes safety film for three entrances, a new phone system for emergency communications, three exterior doors and two electronic door locks, fencing to separate the elementary playground from the parking lots, emergency safety kits for each classroom and signage to direct people to the two main entrances for our building. Grant applications were due on Friday, June 8th. Money must be allocated by the end of June. Hopefully, they will hear in the next couple of weeks just what projects they can complete.
