Final PEAQ Readings for Clark County
Friday, June 1st, 2018 -- 9:47 AM
-Clark County’s Crops and Soil Agent, Richard Halopka, took the last PEAQ readings for Clark County. The PEAQ, or Predictive Equations for Alfalfa Quality, helps make farmers aware of the maturity of first cutting of hay, which is very valuable to reduce cost by harvesting forages at the highest value to reduce purchase inputs for their dairy ration. Richard took the final readings Thursday and found the following results at various locations throughout the county; for Dorchester, he found an RFV, or Relative Feed Value of 160 at a height of 32” with the buds present; and for Curtiss he found an RFV of 140 at a height of 36” with buds present. Neillsville and Greenwood have both been harvested.
Generally, good dairy forage is 140-170 RFV. Richard said in speaking with farmers in two locations today, they said they’ll begin mowing today or tomorrow.
