Marshfield American Legion Celebrates New Upgrade

Thursday, May 24th, 2018 -- 7:59 AM

(WDLB) -Marshfield's American Legion Post 54 has celebrated its first major upgrades in decades.

Dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held last night for the new Merkel Brothers Vietnam Veterans Memorial Patio. The new outdoor addition to the club house features two fire pits with swivel rocking chairs, a fireplace, pizza oven, benches, and bistro tables and chairs, protected by two pergolas. It's the brain child of Paul Rogers--the Chairman of the Board for Rogers Cinema Theaters. To help raise funds for the improvements, Rogers, Post Commander Dave Lafontaine, and veterans Mike Feirer and Gary Cummings initiated a program called the Marshfield Honor Walk. The program supplies banners along Central Avenue featuring pictures of Marshfield veterans--each one sponsored by a loved one, relative, friend or business. Rogers says some of the money raised will go to the Main Street Marshfield program, but the lion's share will go right back into improvements at the Legion hall itself.

Rogers said the honor walk program sold out for this year, and is already sold out for next year--with reservations being taken for 2020. One of the main goals of the program is to turn the Marshfield post into one of the best in the state--and organizers have identified a five-year plan for targeted improvements. And the Department of Wisconsin Adjutant says they are well on their way. And the home of Post 54 is getting a new name. Rogers says it will now being known as Veterans Memorial Hall, Home of the American Legion.
