Marshfield Police Association Holds Annual Peace Officer Memorial Day Ceremony

Thursday, May 17th, 2018 -- 9:04 AM

(WDLB) -The Marshfield Police Department last night honored two current members of the force, the only member of the department ever killed on the job and two Wisconsin officers who died in the line of duty last year.

The Marshfield Professional Police Association held its annual Peace Officer Memorial Day ceremony last night at Beell Stadium, named in honor of former Marshfield Police officer Fred Beell, who was killed in the line of duty while responding to a burglary at the Marshfield Brewery on August 5th of 1933. The program also took time to remember the two Wisconsin police officers who died in 2017--Wisconsin State Trooper Anthony Borostowski and Everest Metro Police Detective Jason Weiland. Officer Josh Larsen said they were among the 134 police officers who died in the line of duty last year--including 46 who were killed by firearms. Marshfield Mayor Bob McManus read a proclamation declaring yesterday Peace Officer Memorial Day in the city of Marshfield. And he thanked officers on behalf of a grateful city. Also last night, Officer Larsen presented Officer Alex Mitchell with the department's 2018 Valor Award, for his handling of a traffic stop last October, in which a suspect was described as armed and dangerous.

Officer Mitchell was recognized for using various techniques to de-escalate the situation, eventually tasing the individual--but not shooting him. The incident occurred last October 23rd at Dairy Queen, and gained national notoriety for the way in which Officer Mitchell defused the situation--in a day-and-age when officer-involved shootings have become common-place in our society. Also honored last night was Officer Aaron Wargowsky--who received the department's "Employee of the Year" award. On two occasions in 2017, Officer Wargowsky demonstrated patience and compassion to safely end emotionally-charged situations involving suicidal individuals who were armed with handguns.
