-Colby school officials and law enforcement met with parents Thursday night regarding an active shooter drill held at the district on Monday. On Monday afternoon, an officer with the Abbotsford-Colby Police Department came to the school and fired blank shots. The district staff and parents were notified about the drill 10 minutes before it occurred. However, they were notified by phone and not all of them saw the alert. For some, their reaction was very real as they ran from the building and hid in some neighboring woods. The district said the drill was a wakeup call and more work needs to be done to make sure students are safe. The district defended their decision on the drill stating they can’t improve a situation if students know a drill is coming and react to it as such.
Most in attendance at the event on Thursday only had positive things to say about the drill. Those in attendance were also given an overview on the training program that staff undergoes, known as ALICE training. They also discussed implementing a school resource officer.
