Some Unhappy with Active Shooter Drill at Colby High School

-Some students, teacher and parents are unhappy about an active shooter drill that took place at the Colby High School.On Monday afternoon, an officer with the Abbotsford-Colby Police Department came to the school and fired blank shots. The district staff was notified about the drill 10 minutes before it occurred. However, they were notified by phone and not all of the staff saw the alert. For some, their reaction was very real as they ran from the building and hid in some neighboring woods. The district said the drill was a wakeup call and more work needs to be done to make sure students are safe.
The district defended their decision on the drill stating they can’t improve a situation if students know a drill is coming and react to it as such. However, they did say the drill went smoothly and the building was evacuated within 30 minutes. A school safety community discussion will be held on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Colby High School theater. The discussion will feature school procedures and allow parents and students to ask questions.
