Another Hot and Dry Week in Wisconsin's Fields

Tuesday, June 15th, 2021 -- 8:08 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) It was another hot and dry week in Wisconsin farm fields last week, which allowed growers to continue harvesting hay and spray crops.

However, according to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, the lack of moisture is beginning to result in stress to corn and small grains, according to the latest crop progress summary from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service.

Topsoil moisture conditions are rated 23 percent very short, 36 percent short, 40 percent adequate and only one percent surplus. As of Sunday, 96 percent of the corn crop is emerged statewide.

Reporters put the corn condition at 71 percent good to excellent, which is five percentage points below last week. Ninety-two of the soybeans have also sprouted, six days ahead of last year and nearly two weeks better than the five-year average.

The condition of the crop is rated 65 percent good to excellent, seven percentage points lower than a week ago. Oats are 41 percent headed and beginning to show color in southern Wisconsin.

Winter wheat is 84 percent headed and 13 percent coloring. And farmers have 87 percent of their first hay crop off the fields. That's six days ahead of last year and eight days ahead of the average.
