Marshfield Aldermen See City's Five-Year Planning Document
Wednesday, April 25th, 2018 -- 8:00 AM
(WDLB) -Marshfield aldermen got their first look last night at the city's latest version of its five-year planning document. The Common Council was presented with the Capital Improvement Program that covers major projects from 2019 through 2023. City Administrator Steve Barg said the plan totals just over 33-million dollars, and nearly half that is earmarked for street work. Street work makes up 44-percent of the C-I-P. The next-biggest chunk of funding belongs to parks, at nearly 25-percent--or eight-point-two million dollars. The 2020 portion of the C-I-P includes funding for a replacement for Hefko Pool. Alderman Chris Jockheck wishes that project had been moved up. And Jockheck wants to use money now set aside for street work to help pay for a new aquatic center to replace the city's aging and antiquated pool. Right now, the C-I-P for 2020 includes two-point-eight million dollars in borrowing and three-point-four million in private donations.
Alderman Tom Witzel says there's a mindset with some in the community that the city should pay for the whole thing. But no matter who pays for it, he says the project must get done soon, to keep dollars from leaving Marshfield, and to attract new money as well. Barg said the pool funding was earmarked for 2020 only because that's the earliest a private and community-based fundraising effort could likely get going. City officials have noted that no formal fundraising process has yet been started. The Council took no formal action on the C-I-P last night. That is scheduled for May 8th.
