Underage Drinking Declining

A survey says fewer Wisconsin high school students participate in underage drinking than in previous years.According to WDLB, the Wisconsin Youth Risk Behavior Survey studies high school students every two years for topics including sexual activity, school safety, drug use and alcohol use. Nearly 50 percent of girls and 30 percent of boys report anxiety in the new report. While students generally feel safer at school than in the past, there’s a small but growing group that rarely feels safe at school. Wells says it’s a trend she and others have seen??"but she says it lacks actual acknowledgement by many??"but it’s slowly changing. 55-point-four percent of students said they are in good or excellent health. Another 12-point-eight percent of students say they have a physical disability or long-term health issue. Just over a quarter of students say they get adequate sleep, which is defined as eight or more hours per night.
About one-quarter of high-school students are sexually active, a drop of eight-percent over the past decade. Nearly one-quarter of students are bullied at school, 20 percent get into physical fights, and just over five-percent carry a weapon on school property. Many Wisconsin communities have recently passed ordinances that fine parents for allowing parties where underage drinking occurs and Marshfield School Superintendent Dee Wells says kids are generally a lot more anxious these days.
