Candidates for Marshfield School Board Appear in Forum

(WDLB) -The five people running for three spots on the Marshfield Board of Education laid out their visions last night for why they're in the race, and what their priorities are for the district. The two incumbents and three challengers answered questions for nearly two hours last night, at the 2nd Street Community Center in Marshfield. Sam Steiner moved to Marshfield five years ago, and said she's passionate about the welfare of children, has a master's degree in speech pathology, and has had two sons get well-rounded educations in Marshfield. The resounding concern she's heard is teacher morale, especially at the elementary level. She says teachers also say they need more than 40 minutes per class period, and she would like to implement at least one planned long weekend a month--something she says is done in larger districts like Minneapolis and Milwaukee. Mary Carney is running for another term on the school board, after first getting elected three years ago. Carney says teacher retention is one of her top priorities, and one of her visions for the district is to scale back some of the testing pressures put on students and teachers. Jodi Meyer is one of three candidates challenging the incumbents. Meyer moved to Marshfield six years ago, largely because of the school system. And she wants to stress communication between teachers, administrators and students.
Karen Schulmann has had three children go through the Marshfield school system, and now she wants to give back. And she wants to restore the school district to the way she found it when she and her family moved here 20 years ago. Incumbent Frances Bohon is seeking another term on the school board, and is currently in her second stint on the board. Her passion has been curriculum. Bohon and Carney are the incumbents in the race, and Steiner, Meyer and Schulmann are challenging them--while also running for an open seat on the board. Current Board President Marlene Stueland is stepping down. The top three vote-getters on April third will win three-year terms on the board.
