(WDLB) -Marshfield's new home for city government would be remodeled by a south Wood County company, under a recommendation endorsed last night. The city's Board of Public Works voted in favor of hiring Eagle Construction of Wisconsin Rapids to remodel what will become the new city hall at 207 West Sixth Street. The recommendation now goes to the full Common Council for its consideration next week. City Public-Works Director Dan Knoeck said last night Eagle's was the lowest of nine bids received, just below 705-thousand dollars. The city's budget for the project was 600-thousand. Knoeck said the city would reduce the remodeling budget by scaling back some of the renovations it wanted done to the facility, and will now save money by reusing existing doors, frames and ceiling tile, delete motorized roller shades from the new Council Chambers, cancel a study of the building's electrical system, plus a few other cuts. After those cuts, Knoeck said the project is still 22-thousand dollars over budget.
Eagle Construction was chosen over eight other firms, including three from Marshfield. Don Nikolai Construction submitted the second-lowest bid, Marawood Construction had the fourth-lowest bid package and The Boson Company submitted the third-highest among the proposals. The former Forward Financial Bank building will get renovated into the new home of city government over the summer, with staff members moving in over the extended Labor Day weekend. Forward Financial completed and moved into its new 16-million dollar facility along North Central Avenue last month.
