Neillsville City Council Discusses AirBnBs
Friday, March 2nd, 2018 -- 9:02 AM
-The Neillsville City Council discussed AirBnBs at their meeting on Tuesday. The item was brought to the attention of the council due to concerns regarding the city’s room tax. A city ordinance, as well as state laws, requires any facility that allows guests to stay, like hotels, B&Bs and AirBnBs, must charge a sales tax for guests staying at the facility. AirBnBs are not immune from these laws. They too must charge that tax to the city and the state. If you decided to have your home become an AirBnB, those laws apply to you as well. There are also licensing guidelines that need to be followed as well.
There are AirBnBs in Neillsville, and throughout Clark County, and it was suggested by the council that if they haven’t been paying the necessary taxes, they could actually owe the city and state money. No action was taken on the agenda item, it was merely brought to the council’s attention and the City Clerk-Treasurer will address any future issues regarding AirBnBs.
