Memorial Medical Center's CEO on Rural Health, Part 7

Tuesday, February 27th, 2018 -- 11:35 AM

-President and CEO of Memorial Medical Center, Ryan Neville, spoke with Dr. Bill Auxier of Rural Health Leadership Radio on the importance of rural health.

Ryan explained MMC’s strategy when it comes to employee recruitment and retention.

"Having your employed doctors is one of the biggest leverage points a rural healthcare facility can have. If you have the physicians, you have some negotiation points. That's very important to us. So, we really looked at how do we attract physicians to our organization? Sometimes you think you need to attract them to the town, which is important. We want them to move to our town, but we also want them to come to our organization early and then fall in love with our town."

"So, that's kinda the strategy we took. So, we implemented three eleven day contracts. So, instead of a physician working four eights, they work three elevens. We asked the community, would you rather have your primary care doc here until 7pm three days a week or until 4:30pm four days a week. And they said, absolutely, 7pm because this is a hard working town and we don't want them to miss work. And we know that the trend in healthcare is that you come for preventative visits and we wanted to make it easy for patients to come here and the evening hours helps with that."

"For the physician side, we're not far from Madison, Minneapolis, Green Bay and others. We have some nice urban markets that people like to live in. They can drive in and we have apartments that they can rent. And they're here for three days and then off for four. And so the work life balance has been very attractive. Now they're able to pick up extra hours and often times they do."

"On the other side of that, we've also been able to attract physicians who have this really robust and full practice and they want to take the first step into retirement. So, they want to go from full time to part time and this three day is just perfect for them. So, we have this mix of really young docs and some docs whose kids just went to college and they're looking to have more of a work/life balance, but they want to continue to work for another 10-15 years."

Coming up on Wednesday, Ryan will share some lesson learned stories that he’s experienced as MMC’s CEO.
