Memorial Medical Center's CEO on Rural Health, Part 5

Friday, February 23rd, 2018 -- 12:29 PM

-President and CEO of Memorial Medical Center, Ryan Neville, spoke with Dr. Bill Auxier of Rural Health Leadership Radio on the importance of rural health.

Ryan continued talking about the transition in becoming an accountable care organization.

"We were able to get funding where Medicare and insurance savings programs put out really grants for every new ACO to help support the cost of the transition. So, it became a nice opportunity for us to learn with little risk. So, we're just getting into year three, which is a three year commitment. We're proud of our journey. We have done what we expected to do and even more."

"I would say the good surprises is that it impacted the way we think, not only with the Medicare population, but with our industrial, so we have direct contracts with employers. We see that as a population that we need to manage with a care coordinator. We never would have thought that without the ACO model."

"I think the frustration is that the patients were very confused about what they were in. A traditional Medicare patient is assigned to an ACO. And certain things, be it a wellness visit or traditional care visit, these were all new to us and they were really new to the patients. So, there was a learning curve we had to take our patients through as we were learning the same curve as well."

Coming up on Monday, Ryan will talk about why he would continue down the same path in having MMC become an ACO.
