Memorial Medical Center's CEO on Rural Health, Part 4

Thursday, February 22nd, 2018 -- 1:50 PM

-President and CEO of Memorial Medical Center, Ryan Neville, spoke with Dr. Bill Auxier of Rural Health Leadership Radio on the importance of rural health.

Ryan talked about the transition, both good and bad, in becoming an accountable care organization.

"I would say we're early adopters for rural facilities that are independent becoming an ACO. Back in 2014/2015, when I looked around, the majority of our volume was outpatient. But I think we thought as an inpatient hospital. And so we wanted to change the healthcare delivery model in the way we looked at patients to be more outpatient focused. So, we did some research on what are the delivery models that are emerging in the country. Of course, Accountable Care Organizations came up, population health and others were all terms we wanted to become more familiar with and put into our strategy."

"Well, we're not big enough to become an ACO and I heard how there are strategies of becoming an ACO through a national/rural ACO model. And so we joined in and we were the only Wisconsin hospital that joined in."

Coming up on Friday, Ryan will continue to explain what MMC went through in becoming an accountable care organization.
