Primary Day in Wisconsin, Marshfield Mayor's Race a Highlight
Tuesday, February 20th, 2018 -- 8:02 AM
(WDLB) -Today is primary election day in Wisconsin. It is a bigger day for some areas of the state than for others. In Marshfield, for example, three people are running for the Mayor's office, and the top two vote getters advance to the general election. Current Common Council members Rebecca Spiros and Tom Witzel are running, as is political newcomer Bob McManus. As for the biggest challenge facing the city's immediate future, McManus says city leaders need to better communicate their message to residents, whether it pertains to projects like the Wenzel Family Plaza, or major concerns over things like roads. Spiros sites cost overruns on major projects like the new library as a major challenge facing the city moving forward. With state levy limits, Spiros says the city needs to do a better job of looking internally at cutting costs and improving efficiencies.
Witzel says there is a significant disconnect between Marshfield citizens and city government, and he sites that as his major challenge facing the city right now. Both Witzel and McManus have said the city needs to create a Communications Coordinator position, while Spiros has come out against that idea. The top two vote-getters advance to the April 3rd general election, and the winner of that race replaces longtime Mayor Chris Meyer, who is stepping down after five two-year terms in office.
