Neillsville City Council Approves Sewer Ordinance for Memorial Medical Center's New Facility, But Not Without More Argument

-The Neillsville City Council approved the sewer lateral extension of Memorial Medical Center’s new facility. The council has been debating this for some time now. Memorial Medical Center will be hooking into the city’s sewer system from their new facility on River Avenue. There was a lot of concern on behalf of the council regarding protection of the tax payers and the environment in regards to MMC’s plan. At first, MMC thought annexation would be the best way to accomplish this, but in the end, connecting to the city’s sewer system with their own lateral and creating a lift station that MMC will maintain proved to be the best option. This was presented to the council back in December and, since then, the council has been working on a sewer ordinance to accommodate this. The ordinance was presented to the council last night, first during the Public Works portion of the meeting and then again during the regular common council. However, the initial discussion during Public Works was not without its arguments.
Council member Julie Counsell wanted to add further wording to make sure the city had control over the future of the lateral and make sure the facility is following all the rules. At this point, Council member Chuck Glassbrenner accused Counsell of trying to run a police state by putting so many restriction on the hospital and continuing to delay the project. Counsell insisted she is protecting the tax payers. In the end, the ordinance was approved by the council.
