Cattle and Calves Numbers in Wisconsin

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -All cattle and calves in Wisconsin as of January 1 totaled 3.50 million head.

According to the USDA's latest cattle report, that was down one percent from the same time a year earlier. State cattlemen had 285,000 beef cows on hand as of last month, about two percent less than in early 2017. Milk cows, at 1.28 million, were down 5,000 head from last year. The number of heifers 500 pounds and over totaled 830,000 head, down one percent from last January, while heifers for beef cow replacement remained the same at 80,000. Heifers for milk cow replacement were at 700,000 head, also down one percent. Meanwhile, the total number of steers weighing 500 pounds and over were down five percent at 380,000 head. Bulls weighing 500 pounds and over was unchanged at 30,000 head.

Calves under 500 pounds on January 1, 2018, totaled 700,000 head, down one percent from last year. The 2017 calf crop was estimated at 1.43 million head, up 1 percent from the 2016 calf crop. Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter in all feedlots totaled 280,000 head, up four percent from one year ago.
