Milk Production Up in Wisconsin for December

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Milk production during the final month of 2017 was up once again in the Dairy State.

According to the USDA's monthly milk production report, Wisconsin farmers produced 2.54 billion pounds of milk last month, up 1.0 percent from December 2016, and more than November's 2.44 billion pounds (which had one less day on the calendar). Year-to-year production has risen 42 of the the past 43 months in Wisconsin, according to records kept by Wisconsin Ag Connection. Only May of 2017 showed a dip in the trend. Nationally, 17 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was 1.2 percent more than in 2016, and greater than the 16.2 billion pounds made in November 2017.

Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.74 million head, 54,000 head more than December 2016, and 3,000 head more than November 2017. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.28 million head, about 1,000 head fewer than and 3,000 less than last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 1,995 pounds, up 25 pounds from last year's figures.
