Another Great Week in Wisconsin's Farm Fields

Tuesday, June 8th, 2021 -- 10:01 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) Conditions were much more ideal for farmers in Wisconsin after the Memorial Day holiday, which allowed many growers to finish planting crops, harvest hay and start spraying corn.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, that's according to the latest weekly crop/weather report, which stated temperatures were well above normal all week, and most parts of the state received little to no precipitation.

Topsoil moisture conditions were rated nine percent very short, 24 percent short, 64 percent adequate and three percent surplus. As of Sunday, all but two percent of the corn in the state had been planted, with emergence close to 90 percent.

That's five days ahead of last year and 11 days better than the five-year average. Corn condition is rated 76 percent good to excellent, which is slightly below what it was a week earlier.

The soybeans are also mostly planted with 83 percent now emerged--nearly a week ahead of last year at this time and 13 days ahead of the average. Twenty-two percent of oats are headed, with the crop rated 80 percent good to excellent.

Winter wheat is doing slightly better at 87 percent good to excellent condition statewide. And the first cutting of alfalfa hay is reported to be 67 percent complete, six days ahead of last year, and five days ahead of the average.
