Marshfield School Board Member Speaks About Lawsuit

Friday, December 22nd, 2017 -- 9:01 AM

(WDLB) -A Marshfield Board of Education member says that she will not take her name off of a lawsuit against State School Superintendent Tony Evers.

The lawsuit was filed by the Milwaukee-based Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty, and claims that Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction are not following the “Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny”, or “REINS” (rains), Act. Mary Carney is a plaintiff in the lawsuit, along with New London School Board member Chris Martinson, and two teachers??"Kristi Koschkee of Pleasant Prairie and Amy Rosno of Burlington. And while all four plaintiffs are participating in the lawsuit as taxpaying citizens and not district officials or employees, Marshfield School Board President Marlene Stueland said last week she will meet with the other board members and the district’s legal counsel to investigate whether Carney has violated any district board policies by participating in the lawsuit.

In an open letter issued on Wednesday, Carney clarified that she is acting as an individual taxpayer on behalf of all taxpayers in Wisconsin, not as a representative of the Marshfield School Board. She’s also proposing a motion at next month’s Board of Education meeting to clarify that the board is not a part of the lawsuit in any way.
