More Info on Homless Shelter in Marshfield

Saturday, December 9th, 2017 -- 6:26 AM

(WDLB) -We have a little more information regarding the closing this week of Marshfield’s transitional homeless shelter.

The St. Vincent Board of Directors released a statement Friday further explaining the shelter’s abrupt closing on Tuesday. The statement reads, in part, “The decision to close the Marshfield Family Shelter and disband the Shelter Board was done so after dealing with a long string of issues that stemmed back for quite some time. Lacking experience in running a shelter ??" especially of this size and nature ??" we the board did not anticipate the extent of various social issues that the shelter and staff would face in assisting the homeless population??"things like drug addiction, mental illness, crime and abuse.”

The statement goes on to say that, “in addition to basic safety concerns for the staff and residents, there are the financial constraints that come with running a non-profit shelter funded largely in part by community donations and contributions from other non-profit organizations, and our responsibility to maintain the integrity of the goal--serving the community and providing safe environment with the resources, funding and staff that we had.” The board also said it is their goal to see the building open again as a shelter in the future. Meanwhile, all but one family from the shelter has found alternative housing in the wake of the closing.
