Wisconsin Dairy Cows Continue To Produce More

Wisconsin dairy cows continue to outpace themselves by producing more milk during the month of October than the same time a year earlier.Wisconsin Ag Connection reports that sccording to the USDA's monthly milk production report, state output totaled 2.55 billion pounds last month, up 2.3 percent from October 2016, and more than September's 2.46 billion pounds (which had less days on the calendar). Year-to-year production has risen 40 of the the past 41 months in Wisconsin, according to records kept by Wisconsin Ag Connection. Nationally, 16.7 billion pounds of milk was produced in the 23 major dairy states, which was 1.5 percent more than in 2016, and grater than the previous month's 16.2 billion pounds.
Meanwhile, the number of milk cows on farms in the 23 major states was 8.74 million head, 67,000 head more than October 2016, but 1,000 head less than September 2017. The average number of milk cows on Wisconsin farms for the month was 1.28 million head, unchanged from last month and last year. Monthly production per cow averaged 1,995 pounds, up 45 pounds from last year's figures.
