(WDLB) -He is Marshfield's most famous citizen to date, and he was honored during a day-long event on Thursday, on the one-year anniversary of his passing.Former Congressman and Defense Secretary Melvin Laird passed away November 16th of last year, at the age of 94. The community and Marshfield Clinic spent the day yesterday honoring his legacy, and his many contributions to health care, his community and his country. Former Marshfield Clinic Executive Director Fritz Wenzel, who emceed and spoke at several events at the Laird Center for Medical Research, said Mel made lasting contributions to health care--at the local, state and national levels.
The Pro Arte Quartet held a tribute concert in Melvin Laird's honor, in the Helen Connor Laird fine-arts building named for Mel's mother on the U-W Marshfield-Wood County campus. The tribute was fitting, because in 1983, the same quartet performed a memorial concert for Helen C. Laird at the Marshfield campus.
