Winter Weather Makes Things Difficult for Farmers

Tuesday, November 7th, 2017 -- 8:00 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -Though it didn't stay around for very long, many areas of Wisconsin saw multiple snow falls during the past week, making it difficult to bring it the remainder of the crops for the year.

The state's agriculture department said Monday that temperatures were also below normal statewide with lows dipping into the 20s. Many producers are still waiting for grain moistures to drop before combining, especially in the northern portions of the state. Topsoil moisture supplies were rated one percent very short, seven percent short, 81 percent adequate and 11 percent surplus. As of Sunday, the weekly crop report said 94 percent of Wisconsin's corn was reported mature. Corn harvested for grain was 37 percent complete, which is two weeks behind average.

The moisture content of corn harvested for grain was reported at 22 percent. Corn acres harvested for silage is now all but five percent complete. Ninety-six percent of the winter wheat has been planted, with emergence running at 84 percent. Farmers say their fall tillage is about 42 percent complete, five days behind last year, and a week behind the five-year average.
