Wisconsin Hospital Patients Safer Now Compared to Five Years Ago

Thursday, November 2nd, 2017 -- 10:08 AM

(WDLB) -Wisconsin hospital patients are a lot safer now than five years ago. That's according to the Washington group Leapfrog, which rates the Badger State the sixth best for hospital patient safety.

That's way up from 44th in the group's initial grades in 2012, and Wisconsin was among five states showing the most improvement. The Marshfield Medical Center has received a grade of “C” in the latest rankings. The score indicates the former Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital scored below average for C-Diff infections, and urinary tract infections during an intensive care stay, dangerous objects left in a patient’s body after surgery, dangerous blood clots, accidental cuts and tears, communication with doctors, patient falls and dangerous bed sores. But the Marshfield hospital scored above average in categories like handling serious breathing problems, communication about medicines and hospital discharge, communication with nurses and the responsiveness of hospital staff.

The Marshfield Medical Center declined to comment on several categories for the study, including effective leadership to prevent errors, enough qualified nurses and handwashing. The former St. Joseph’s Hospital got a grade of “C” last fall, and in 2014 and 2015 as well. Its highest recent score was a “B” in the spring of 2016.
