Marshfield Property Owners will See a Smaller Tax Increase

Tuesday, October 31st, 2017 -- 8:02 AM

(WDLB) -Marshfield property owners are facing a slightly smaller tax increase than first thought, under a recommended budget for next year.

The Marshfield Common Council voted unanimously last night to send the recommended 2018 budget to a public hearing next month. As it stands right now, the proposed spending plan comes with a tax rate of nine-dollars and 20-cents for every one-thousand dollars of assessed property value. That would be an eight-cent increase over the current tax rate. The original budget proposal was calling for a nearly two-percent increase in the tax rate. But general transportation aids from the state came in higher than expected--to the tune of nearly 130-thousand dollars.

The Council used the opportunity to add 22-thousand dollars to maintain the part-time presence of a Wood County drug court counselor in the city of Marshfield, instead of making those who need the service drive to Wisconsin Rapids. The Council did discuss increasing its "rainy day" fund for unforeseen emergencies, but action on that issue was delayed. The 2017 amount was 100-thousand dollars, and roughly half of that amount remains. The Council also voted last night to include nearly seven-thousand dollars for a full-time crossing guard at 11th-and-Lincoln near Washington Elementary School. The Council set a public hearing date of November 21st at 6pm.
