UW-Eau Claire Students Bring Rabies Awareness to Clark County, Part 3

Thursday, October 26th, 2017 -- 10:17 AM

-Nursing students from UW-Eau Claire are raising awareness in Clark County regarding the dangers of the rabies virus.

I spoke with several UW-Eau Claire nursing students and they explained if there’s a cutoff point when it comes to getting the vaccine.

"If they are starting to show symptoms, the vaccine is less effective. There are some treatments for it, but there's no cut off point, so they should definitely seek medical attention as soon as possible."

They also provided general prevention tips you can follow to reduce your risk of contracting the virus.

"A couple of things to keep in mind in order to prevent rabies, is to protect your pets by keeping them all current on rabies vaccinations. There are different forms of rabies vaccination. Some only last for one year and others can be 3 years long, so you need to make sure you maintain that. Because vaccinated domestic animals also provide an important buffer between humans and the wildlife that harbor that rabies. Even indoor cats and dogs can be exposed to rabies from bats that can enter homes. And always try to exclude bats from living quarters by keeping screens in good repair and by closing up any small openings that can allow them to enter. And also teach children a healthy respect for unfamiliar dogs and cats and never approach wild animals."

Coming up on Friday, the students will offer a final reminder on rabies prevention.
