UW-Eau Claire Students Bring Rabies Awareness to Clark County, Part 2

Wednesday, October 25th, 2017 -- 11:30 AM

-Nursing students from UW-Eau Claire are raising awareness in Clark County regarding the dangers of the rabies virus.

I spoke with several UW-Eau Claire nursing students and they explained the symptoms of the rabies virus.

"The early symptoms of the disease is kinda like any other disease. You get fever, headaches, general weakness and some pain. But then you'll start to feel some numbness and tingling in the extremities. And then, as it progress, it becomes much more symptomatic. You get the confusion, anxiety, hallucination. The symptoms you think of in the movies when someone becomes rabid. And these will eventually lead to death."

They also explained what you should do if you get bit by an animal that may have the virus.

"We'd initially encourage them to call the police department and try and trap the animal somehow, so it can be tested for rabies. If they can not find the animal, we encourage them to call the police department and they'll come and begin the process of getting you to the hospital and filing a report."

"And, if you do get bit, you should immediately wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical attention if needed because that's going to decrease the risk of infection."

Coming up on Thursday, the students will explain whether or not there’s a cutoff point when it comes to getting the vaccine.
