Marshfield City Council Shifts Funding in 2018 Budget

Wednesday, October 25th, 2017 -- 8:01 AM

(WDLB) -New radios for Marshfield police officers would get funding initially earmarked for a new pet shelter, under a proposal endorsed by city aldermen last night.

During a special meeting on the city's proposed 2018 budget, the Marshfield Common Council voted unanimously in favor of taking 190-thousand dollars which was set aside this summer as a contribution to the Marshfield Area Pet Shelter, and reallocate it toward 45 new radios for the Marshfield Police Department. Alderman Tom Witzel made the suggestion, and the motion to make the switch. 45 new radios will cost 180-thousand dollars, and City Administrator Steve Barg said the earmark for the pet shelter donation from the city could be pushed off until 2019, when the facility is tentatively scheduled for construction. Barg and the Council had initially proposed adding the 45 new radios piecemeal over three years--15 radios at a time. But Alderman Peter Hendler said the radios for the police officers can't wait.

The Common Council had voted back in June of this year to help build the proposed pet shelter, with a contribution of 190-thousand dollars. Most aldermen indicated last night they would be in favor of adding that spending to the 2019 city budget instead. The Council did pay for a portable H-VAC system for the pet shelter's temporary home in the municipal airport's former terminal building. The current MAPS goal is to construct the 77-hundred square-foot facility in 2019.
