UW-Eau Claire Students Bring Rabies Awareness to Clark County, Part 1

Tuesday, October 24th, 2017 -- 11:28 AM

-Nursing students from UW-Eau Claire are raising awareness in Clark County regarding the dangers of the rabies virus.

I spoke with several UW-Eau Claire nursing students and they explained what they’re doing.

"We are working with the Clark County Health Department to raise awareness within Clark County and the surrounding communities regarding animal bites and rabies prevention."

The students went on to explain what rabies is and how it’s contracted.

"The rabies virus is an RNA virus that effects the central nervous system, ultimately causing disease in the brain and, eventually, death. All species of mammals are susceptible to rabies virus infection, but only a few species are reservoirs. Any warm blooded mammal, including livestock, can carry the rabies virus. However, common carriers of the rabies virus include raccoons, skunks, foxes, coyotes and bats.

Coming up on Wednesday, the students will talk about the symptoms of the virus.
