Village of Dorchester Looking for State Help to Keep Drinking Water Safe

(USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin) -The village of Dorchester is seeking state help to keep its drinking water safe.The small village with a population under 1,000 people is an applicant for funding through the Safe Drinking Water Loan Program to address issues in their public drinking water system, according to a release from the Department of Natural Resources. The project is for water main replacement on West First Avenue and South Second Street. The Safe Drinking Water Loan Program provides financial assistance to governments that need to replace or upgrade water infrastructure to protect public health, according to the DNR. It's also one of the programs that has allowed municipalities to replace lead pipes to avoid potential health hazards.
According to the press release, the DNR has found that no further environmental analysis is needed before proceeding to fund the projects. The DNR is seeking public comments regarding potential impacts of the projects and public comments. To comment call Jim Witthuhn, Bureau of Drinking Water and Groundwater by Oct. 17.
