Clark County Judge Provides Answers to Questions on Possible 2nd County Judge

Friday, October 13th, 2017 -- 12:24 PM

-Clark County Judge Jon Counsell has answered some questions regarding a 2nd judge in Clark County.

Back in August, the Clark County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution supporting the creation of a 2nd circuit court branch in the county. Does that mean the county will have a 2nd judge? No, the resolution is just the first step of a very lengthy process which includes the Director of State Court’s Office in Madison working with the legislature to pass new legislation authorizing a 2nd judge for the county. The purpose of the resolution was let the Director of State Court’s Office and the legislature that the county will support a 2nd judge.

However, this process is unpredictable and could take many months. Based on past legislative sessions, it could be 2019 or 2020 before the county would see a new judge. In regards to whether or not the county needs a new judge that is determined by the Director of State Court’s Office which uses the “Weighted Case Load Analysis.” According to the analysis, Clark County would be 5th on the list of Wisconsin’s 72 counties behind Sawyer, Dunn, Jackson and Marathon.
