Wood County Sheriff's Department Warns Residents About Scam
Wednesday, October 11th, 2017 -- 8:09 AM
-The Wood County Sheriff’s Department is warning county residents of a scam making the rounds. The department received complaints from residents stating they’re receiving calls claiming to be from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department and telling them they missed jury duty or have outstanding warrants for their arrest. They continue saying that failure to pay over the phone immediately will result in their arrest. These calls seem real because the caller is using software that changes the caller I.D. to look like the Sheriff’s Department or other law enforcement agency is calling. However, the department reminds residents that law enforcement will not contact you and demand payment over the phone.
If you receive a call like this, you should hang up and contact your local law enforcement agency to report it.
